The Believer’s Prayer

Have you prayed the Believer’s Prayer?

Though I’m certain every believer’s prayer will be a little different, there are some elements of the believer’s prayer that are absolutely necessary.

I’m thinking you would not even be looking at this page unless you have already begun to believe that there might be something to the Christian life. Please, continue reading, not only learn about but, to begin what I know will be the most fulfilling adventure of your life!

A new believer realizes that he or she is a “sinner” (simply, one who has deliberately chosen to do what they know to be wrong.)

“for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.”
Romans 3:23

A new believer confesses he or she is a sinner. Like the ‘prodigal son,’ they say,

“I have sinned…”
Luke 15:21,

A new believer repents (feels such regret for past conduct as to change one’s mind regarding it) of past sins.

“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret…”
- 2 Corinthians 7:10.

A new believer understands and believes that God has provided a rescue from their current condition through Jesus.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
- John 3:16

A new believer submits their life to God and His way of doing things.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
- James 4:7

A new believer thanks God for the grace He has extended to them in forgiving their sins.

“…giving thanks to the Father… …in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
- Colossians 1:12-14

While praying this prayer with new believers, I first explain what God has done through Jesus as it is written in John 3 of the Bible.

I then tell them that I would like to lead them in this believer’s prayer, and I ask them to pray it aloud, repeating after me.

“God, I know that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins, and I ask You to forgive me. I believe You gave Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die in my place, for my sins, on the cross.
I believe You have forgiven me, and I accept Your salvation through Jesus.
Jesus, I choose to turn from doing them again and to live for You for the rest of my life.
I choose You to be the Lord and Master of my life.
I will be who You want me to be.
I will do what You want me to do.
I will go where You want me to go.
Thank you, God, for hearing my prayer and forgiving me of all my sins.
Amen.”

After leading a new believer in this prayer, I ask them to pray to the Lord using their own words as I continue to pray for them.

Have you ever prayed the believer’s prayer? If not, I urge you to do so now and give the Lord an opportunity to work supernaturally in your life.

Will you do it now? When you pray that prayer sincerely, God will do the rest!

If you have just prayed this prayer, I congratulate you for your decision to pray and ask Jesus Christ to be Lord of your life.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
I John 1:9

When you did your part of that verse, confessing your sins, God did His part, removing all of your unrighteousness!

Praise the Lord!

Now, let me warn you, there will be spiritual battles in this adventure of the Christian life. The enemy will do all he can to keep you from following the Lord, but you can make it.

“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
- Romans 8:31

You will find that a set time alone with God each day in prayer and Bible reading will greatly strengthen your new life with Christ.
The faith and fellowship of other believers is another invaluable aid in the Christian life. You will find that fellowship when you attend our church services.
You will experience tremendous spiritual encouragement from the Bible messages, worship, and prayer with other believers in the Lord.

Hey, if you have just prayed this prayer would you let me know? I would really like to give you further encouragement in the way of the Lord and I would like to pray with you that God will lead and guide you daily in His paths.
